Monday Morning ★★★★★

Review of 'Monday Morning ' which can be found here on YouTube.

Length: 03:08
Written & directed by John Allen
Genre: Comedy
Date: 2000
Rating: ★★★

Logline: A suicidal man is having the worst Monday of his life.

This is another simple story told well. Don't let the old video quality put you off. Shot in 2000, it somehow looks older than it is (Like twelve years is that old) due to the washed out colour and possibly the car. Some of the hand held camera work also dates it but the concept is still a relevant one.

Gary Kitching is the man who wants to end it all but isn't stretched too much by the role. Most shots are from the back of his head, his hands or wide shots leaving little room for performance. There is only one line of dialogue but realistically, this could in fact have been left out without taking anything away from it. Having no dialogue tends to open up the international market a bit more for any would be festival submissions or sales. Kitching however, suits the role and creates a likable character none the less.

Music acts almost like a second character in this film. Without it, this could well be an instructional video on how to top yourself. The plucky violin contrasted with the sombre strings create a nice juxtaposition between the comic moments and the darker tonal ones. The lower quality video and the colouring combined with nice cinematography all add up to a very effective mood and feel. This bitter sweet comedy being another example of strong story and simple execution.

Best Bit: Pen doesn't work. Ha!

Worst Bit: Needs better quality upload onto internet.

Final thought: I'm sure my mum used to have a car like that.
