T Is For Toilet ★★★★☆

Review of 'T Is For Toilet' which can be found here on YouTube.

Length: 04:15
Written & animated by Lee Hardcastle
Genre: Animation
Date: 2011
Rating: ★★★

Logline: A young boy is scared about using the toilet. And for good reason.

There are some very unstable minds out there and this film comes from one of them. Probably best not to watch this when having your tea or if your nana's in the room. It's a crude claymation piece thankfully and not a real movie, (that would be too much) which is a mixture of comedy and splatter horror.

It plays to genre quite well and is sophisticated enough to contain mirrored opening and closing shots, a good set up which flows nicely into a dream sequence which then also sets up the surprise ending. Composition is well thought out and there is a variety of good camera shots, angles and movement. The animation itself is effective if not perfect with lots of little details to catch and to entertain. The colour scheme is basic with a primary school feel. Red in particular is used symbolically and to emphasise bad and dangerous things. (just making this up as I go along now) Lighting is also done well as is the adjoining sound effects which definitely add to the gruesome scenes on screen.

Comedy is both highly visual and revolting at the same time. The boys gawky eyes are well creepy as is the whole 'put together in two minutes' look of the film. 'Dad's' dialogue, voiced by Hardcastle, shines through as realistic, crass and funny. His thicko reactions adding to the comedy. Overall, likable but disturbing, very, very disturbing.

Best Bit: Sweary but hilarious dialogue and sound effects.

Worst Bit: Erm, melting face, puking of innards, head getting smashed in, etc.

Final thought: Can you believe the makers of Pingu made him remove his Pingu does the Thing piece. Some people have no sense of humour.
