The Trampolinist ★★☆☆☆

Review of 'The Trampolinist' which can be found here on the BBC Film Network.

Length: 00:59
Written & directed by Chris Robert Mellors
Genre: Comedy
Date: 2009
Rating: ★★☆☆

Logline: A man spends too much time jumping up and down on a trampoline.

This is pretty flaccid as far as plots go. The logline above makes it sound more interesting than it really is I'm afraid. A guy, for whatever reason, (no clear motivation) just springs about in the back garden which, as we find at the end, irks his father into shouting at his wife. I have to presume that this comedy must have been absolutely hilarious at either the point of conception or down on paper as nothing managed to translate onto the screen whatsoever.

You'll be left wondering if there could possibly be any more different shots of someone trampolining left to shoot as it seems every angle is covered here. Actually, the shot variation is one of the positives of the film. There is a nicely composed one with juxtaposing wind chimes in the foreground but other than that, there's not much else to it. No real increase of comedy, no variation in the way he jumps, not even a change of clothes (wardrobe had it easy on this shoot). We are just watching a passage of time with a weakly delivered punchline at the end.

Performance is stiff but acceptable. The edit is okay too, both visually and in sound. Camera quality isn't the greatest but I don't think it would have made a blind bit of difference if this had been shot on the most expensive camera in the world. It all comes down to poor story.

Best Bit: Guitar at the start.

Worst Bit: The crap punchline.

Final thought: Why is he wearing the same clothes every day? Mink.
