Lost Robots ★★☆☆☆

Review of 'Lost Robots' which can be found here on Daily Motion.

Length: 03:32
Written & directed by Paul Cheshire
Genre: Comedy
Date: 2009
Rating: ★★☆☆

Logline: Some profanity spouting robots try to leave the planet.

This short is pretty weak in a lot of areas; story, dialogue, characters... erm, comedy. It looks a bit like an infantile muck about by young kids who still snigger at the word 'wank' and 'cock' (as I still do). It's easy to see where the idea originated from. After all, who doesn't type in swear words the first time they come across the computer voice generator? The gag however, is short lived and in this case, not funny enough to entertain for a full three and a half minutes.

Dialogue is all computer generated and at least differs between each individual character. Other than an attempt for them to leave the planet, most of the dialogue is random lines of insult or statement which doesn't add up to much plus some lines were hard to make out on occasion, a fundamental flaw considering dialogue seems to be the selling point of the film.

There are a couple of redeeming features though. The editing is well done and the distressed film look is a nice effect, which oddly complements the 1950's styled toy robots. Both combine to create something visually interesting. I say interesting, though technically we're just looking at different shots of the same thing over and over again. Using black and white was a good choice which again adds to that vintage sci-fi feel.

Best Bit: Scottish robot voice.

Worst Bit: The cheap laughs.

Final thought: What's with the cigarette?
