Hot And Bothered ★★★☆☆

Review of 'Hot And Bothered' which can be found here on the BBC Film Network.

Length: 02:42
Written & directed by Giannina LaSalvia
Genre: Comedy
Date: 2011
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Logline:A couple struggle to maintain intimate relations after climate change has made it really really hot.

This creative little number was a finalist in the Open University/BBC Creative Climate Short Film Competition 2011 hence the topic and it explores an angle that not many people would consider when thinking about climate change consequences. This shares more elements with an advert than it does a short film. It’s the audience who is being persuaded to change here, not the characters who have no visible arc. Everything pretty much remains at stalemate which is exactly the point it’s trying to make.

The protagonists, Tom, Tom Bonington, and Jane, Louise Blake don’t get any lines, though the adverts they watch on the telly do, which was an interesting device to use. You don’t get to see much of the ‘Affectionmate’ ad which was disappointing at first but at least it’s paid off later on when Tom gets kitted out in a pair. As with most infomercials, the product breaks within the first ten seconds true to form. The ending is a little flat as the characters are left with a glimmer of hope after another wonder product catches their eye. This kind of lessens the dramatic effect and finalism of the subject in hand.Extra points awarded for the lighting and make-up departments who did a good job in creating that ‘hot and bothered’ look. Overall, this is an original concept that will entertain more than make you think but is still a good attempt.

Best Bit: Lighting, make-up and set design.

Worst Bit: Old people’s cellulite.

Final thought: Thought: Brings back fond memories of that two weeks of sunshine we get every year.
