Said Susan ★★★★☆

Review of 'Said Susan' which can be found here at Virgin Media Shorts.

Length: 02:20
Written & directed by Michael Egan
Genre: Comedy
Date: 2012
Rating: ★★★

Logline: A young woman narrates her life out loud, annoying her fed-up boyfriend.

A bit of a slow starter this one, but has a fairly amusing punchline to the joke. For anyone who spends a lot of time reading scripts then tries picking up a book only to be fervently irritated by the amount of unnecessary flowery language on the page, you might get a kick out of this. Am not sure if this is an original concept but I haven't seen it recently and this is a short and fresh attempt.

Karen Fishwick plays novelistic Susan, and she does it very well. A little green but shows promise in both acting and comic delivery. The Scottish accent should be understandable even to the Americans while not being English-a-sized to the point of being ridiculous to the natives. She runs with the great dialogue and gives a just performance for the character.

The first joke comes in just about the right time as there was is a minute danger that people with my goldfish attention span won't see it past the first thirty seconds. Editing tries hard with the little bit below par shoot but a clear attempt at making the edit part of the humour is evident. The shoot looks a little hurried and some camera shots may have suffered from the limited space of the location. The handheld camera work early on provides an nice informal feeling, adding to breaking of the fourth wall dialogue direct to camera.

Note: Jeremy Kyle on in the background means that this is well into mid morning.

Best Bit: "contempt for his dull and vaccant stare", lol.

Worst Bit: Not so good camera quality and cramped space.

Final thought: Darren sounds like a girl don't you think? That's no "husky manner".
