Coming Of Age ★★★★★

Review of 'Coming Of Age' which can be found here at theBBC Film Network.

Length: 15:43
Written by Ben Goodger & Charlie Goodger. Directed by Ben Goodger
Genre: Drama
Date: 2009
Rating: ★★★★

Logline: A young boy has to grow up fast living in a futuristic wasteland where everyday is a battle for survival.

Hands up who loves post-apocalyptic films. For a short, this makes good use of the locations and does a convincing job of creating a barren, broken down apocalyptic landscape (looks just like Hawick). It's also nice to see that the summer weather hasn't changed much in 2035 either. The additional sound effects add to the isolating feel as does the accompanying oppressive soundtrack which is also great at generating and maintaining tension.

Toby Goodger (how many Goodger's are there?) stars as the lead and gives a good attempt at the undemanding role. He takes on the physical elements with gusto and doesn't hold back on the action scenes. The same can be applied to the camera crew as the camera likes to get in on those chase scenes with well done tracking shots. The edit does tend to revel in them though and the chase scene could be a tad on the long side. There is a good cinematic feel and the cinematography will certainly make this look good on the big screen.

Dialogue is minimal. What there is, has been cleverly disguised and is kept interpretable. Is there a c-word in there perhaps? The effect makes the human voice sound animalistic, somehow out of place but not, if you know what I mean? I'm not too sure about the structure however. Never a fan of dream sequences, I'm not convinced it was needed here. That aside, this is a great effort playing on a simple concept and which tackles the genre well.

Best Bit: Camera work is great.

Worst Bit: That any old pill seems to cure all.

Final thought: Boiling a pan of water for no good reason! My goodness.
