DNAUXB ★★★★☆

Review of 'DNAUXB' which can be found here on Vimeo.

Length: 03:30
Animated & directed by Tony Comley
Genre: Music Video
Date: 2011
Rating: ★★★

Logline: A panda space pilot is relentlessly chased by some sharp shooting robots.

Using music from the same titled track by Gameshow Outpatient, this animation takes us back to yesteryear and the arcade era of space invaders with its computer game-like synthesiser and well, erm, its kind of space invader look.

Technically, you have to assume that the panda is the good guy here as there is little information on who is chasing him, (or her?), or why. The character design plays on audience expectations and stereotypes by having the cute curved guy as the hero and the angry faced angular robots as the bad guys. Expectations are also played with at the end as most of us will be expecting the hero to pull up right at the last minute as the bombs hit the evil mothership. Instead, he flies out kamikaze style in a blaze of glory. What better lesson to teach out disillusioned youth?

The drawing looks like a mixture of CGI and hand drawn animation and there is a stark contrast between the two. Action closely follows the audio track structure and changes as the beats do. As usual in music video's, there's no dialogue to hamper our enjoyment of the soundtrack, which also has no lyrics, although this does leave the entire film subject to interpretation. Overall, an easy watch but not altogether captivating. There are moments of boring nothingness and has a slight repetitive feel to it.

Best Bit: Trippy tune and visuals.

Worst Bit: Bit repetitive.

Final thought: My money's on the panda being some intergalactic terrorist and the furrowed brow owl is merely a concerned administrator.
