Covert ★★★★☆

Review of 'Covert' which can be found here on Future Shorts.

Length: 03:04
Written & directed by Joe Berger
Genre: Animation
Date: 2002
Rating: ★★★

Logline: Big Brother covertly listens into secret conversations only to understand the mission a moment too late.

This stylised piece has dated well. Flat colour combined with a comic book look give this a contemporary edge. Colour is also used cleverly to help define a change in character thread and locations. A cold blue resonates with the steely assassin while dangerous reds fill the room where time is running out for the victim. The effect particularly helps with cuts between shots and when using split-screen.

There is a nice pace which is accentuated by sleek, steady camera pans and zooms. Nothing feels rushed and the speed compliments the smooth efficiency of both of these cool and collected characters. It's almost two similar characters being pitted against each other here as both killer and catcher conduct themselves with logical professionalism. A cat and mouse game is played and the unfolding mystery/problem solving aspect is just enough to hold interest although an increase in tension towards the end would have been nice.

The sound design is a real strong point with an apt soundtrack playing in the background plus well constructed sound effects and dialogue. Nothing is wasted and everything you see and hear is essential to the plot. Overall, it looks good on screen and has an interesting plot to match.

Best Bit: Sound design.

Worst Bit: Lack of tension building and emotional connection for the audience.

Final thought: How the assassin got his instructions from that woman on the phone, I'll never know.
