Night School ★★☆☆☆

Review of 'Night School' which can be found here or on the Shooting People Daily Motion page.

Length: 10:45
Written & directed by Ben Soper
Genre: Drama
Date: 2008
Rating: ★★☆☆

Logline: Two awkward teens break into a school at night in order to be intimate.

If you like slow and pointless, you'll love this one. This is technically produced to a high standard but is slightly lacking in plot content. Camera quality and lighting are superb, unfortunately it looks like more time has been spent on the actual lighting than on the script.

Structurally, of the lengthy ten minutes, the first five is a stretched out, slow setup and there's at least a minute and a half of just running. What was watching Will Anatsui having a piss adding to the narrative? Why does the burglar alarm suddenly activate when they've been in there for ages? And why the hell is the front door of the building unlocked?

There is at least the small semblance of character development and arc but as the plot comes full circle and the two teens are back snuggling out in the street, it's hardly a satisfactory plot line for audiences. Anatsui and Tess Mitchell are okay. They don't speak much, roam about and get naked. The drunk acting isn't so good, although watching this while drunk will probably help.

The sound design is also of high quality but it's been used sparingly. Ultimately, this looks like a glossy and polished filming exercise rather than an audience friendly film where it's hard to see what viewers will get from this.

Best Bit: The production standard.

Worst Bit: The story.

Final thought: Never mind him laughing at you with your clothes off, him no sharing his bottle of voddy is reason enough to dump the swine.
