Sofa So Good ★★★★☆

Review of 'Sofa So Good' which can be found here on the BBC Film Network.

Length: 15:59
Written & directed by Robin Lindsey
Genre: Comedy
Date: 2010
Rating: ★★★

Logline: Two old friends reconnect in order to pick up a free sofa.

A well produced film here with fine acting by Mark Parsons and Elio Ruggieri, reasonable dialogue, subtle use of subtext, and well composed shots. The edit stands out as being very professional and the pacing is good and steady. A soundtrack is used sparingly within the montage sequence so emotional content relies mostly on the actors performances. The characters are likeable and share good chemistry on screen and really make for the films strong point. It's a shame that the plot doesn't quite live up to their acting ability as the kind of predictable ending coupled with the underwhelming reveal make for a lacklustre ending.

This steadfast production is also slightly let down by its comedy genre classification too. With the delicate tension between the two main characters and limited laughs, this looked more like a drama to me. Also, I wasn't sure whether the film has been uploaded in a lower quality format but picture colouring seems too vivid and some shots are suffering from poor lighting.

Overall it feels like there was great potential here which didn't quite come into fruition. There isn't a problem with structure but the turning points and story beats all lack oomph and the story feels kind of flat because of this. Otherwise, it makes good on all other aspects of the film.

Best Bit: The two likeable characters work very well together.

Worst Bit: Terrible joke on the end credits.

Final thought: Two pounds and a button never bought em them lagers.
