Losers: Flush ★★★★☆

Review of 'Losers: Flush' which can be found here on the BBC Film Network.

Length: 03:48
Animated & directed by Tom Werber
Genre: Music Video
Date: 2010
Rating: ★★★

Logline: Animated music video for the track 'Flush' by Losers in a Victorian illustration style.

Modern music is merged with vintage imagery here as this effort takes a catchy little rap tune and places it against etching illustrations from the Victorian era. The plot quickly plunges into surrealism but somehow manages to mimic the song where a guy and a girl are pretty much bitching at each other and gives us the old era equivalent of a handlebar moustached gent fighting with his corset wearing wife. Although it's Werber who handles the 2D montage animating with vigour, the drawings themselves come from artist Dan Hillier

With a black and white colour scheme, the immense amount of detail on the screen means that the visuals are neither bland or boring. There is nice depth of field, plenty of movement via pans, zooms and character motion, as well as good variation in shot composition and edits. It's not all plain old cut out animation as there is a distinct computer aided feel. While the action sometimes directly follows the audio lyrics, this is mostly a wild and weird interpretation of the song. Am not the biggest rap fan in the world so half of what was being said didn't really register anyways, but the track is a good one and has an appealing tempo to it. Overall, it's the combination of both invigorating music and brilliant creative thinking that makes this a stand out piece.

Best Bit: Imaginative concept.

Worst Bit: The fast talking rappers make me tune out and miss what they're saying.

Final thought: Yes, I think drugs were involved.
