My First Crush ★★★★☆

Animated & directed by Julia Pott
Genre: Animation
Date: 2007
Rating: ★★★

Logline: People talk about their first crushes.

Hearkening back to Aarman's Creature Comforts, this 2D hand drawn animation transforms everyday people into an odd combination of animal characters drawn with a distinct style and feel.

The juvenile drawing is a nice match for the subject matter and there is a sort of scribbling on school jotters flavour to it. Even the audio fits in well, as you can easily imagine the interviewees sitting in an empty classroom telling their individual stories. Although it is grown adults reminiscing about their childhoods, a sense of childish fun, daft innocence and pleasure shines through their dialogue which is both complemented and enhanced by the visuals.

The scene transitions seem to contain the most action and character animation is minimal but done with good effect. Animal choice for each person is thoughtful and amusing. Dialogue is sometimes literally translated onto screen as well as being used as a means of progress onto the next scene. Backgrounds have nice variation in colour and complexity without stinting the overall simplicity of the piece. The adjoining soundtrack is also well chosen and again, helps set tone and pace.

The real joy comes from listening to the all to familiar tales of first love which have enough variation so that everyone will be able to at least empathise with one or more stories. For me, the visuals almost became secondary to the social and cultural recording which strikes such a universal theme. Overall, a great presentation of an easy idea.

Best Bit: Cute blue fox.

Worst Bit: Sad pony.

Final thought: More of this please.
