The Boss ★★★☆☆

Review of 'The Boss' which can be found here or at the Reed Short Film Competition.

Length: 03:00
Directed by Matthew Rankcom of Treestump Films
Genre: Comedy
Date: 2012
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Logline: Three office workers revolt against their boss after budget cuts means no more digestive biscuits.

This submission into the annual Reed short Film comp, which always has a theme in which this years was 'The Boss', gets off to a strong start with a good opening line that shows promise, if you can ignore the oddly positioned titles and unnecessary 'starring...' text. Momentum is kept up with the introduction of danger music but the film soon starts to lag as the plot descends into nonsensical farce.

The performances aren't half bad but get limited by the dialogue which deteriorates in the latter half of the film. George Collings, Nick Convery and Graham Nicholson take on the roles of disgruntled office workers who can't see past their stomachs. Three characters make the rule of three fit well in comedy sequences and paves the way for punchlines.

Sound levels are a bit iffy in parts, depending on where they're shooting. There's plenty of camera shots that show direct influence from other movies, some camera movement and an attempt to at least carry some semblance of filming knowledge. The film begins to suffer as shooting time runs out and the story ending is left shoved in without consideration. Too much time is wasted on the trio running around in the dark office when it should have been put towards a better climax. This is what ultimately lets down the film.

Best Bit: Eee by gum, it's Yorkshire.

Worst Bit: The really bad ending.

Final thought: Don't start what you can't finish.
