Love Song ★★★★★

Review of 'Love Song' which can be found here at Daily Motion.

Length: 04:30
Written by Alice Lowe & directed by Jacqueline Wright
Genre: Comedy
Date: 2010
Rating: ★★★★★

Logline: Two women struggle to verbalise their feelings after a drunken snog at a party.

I thought this sketch was pretty hilarious. Done in true British comedy style, it mixes naturalistic performance with cringeworthy content. Alice Lowe both wrote and stars alongside fellow comedienne Rachel Stubbings. Both encapsulating modern day urbanite scumbags in a believable manner. In no way as crass as Vicky Pollard, but equally and deliberately uneducated. Character is key here and both actresses deliver in terms of dialogue execution, timing, and non-verbal communication.

There is tons of subtext to be had as the pair uncomfortably discuss everything bar the one thing they want to talk about. The comedy comes from the awkward situation, the stupidity of the characters plus a daft music video part which is added towards the end (hence the title). Although this is mostly two people sitting on a park bench, the plot and dialogue are enough to keep the audience engaged.

Sound is excellent for an external shoot, good camera quality comes through even though the British sunlight never does. Both edit and shot composition work well and show clear direction. The production suits the small screen rather than the large as it has a clear television feel to it. The film comes as part of Jackal Films attempt to shoot a short each month during 2010. you can check out the other ones here. (be warned, the website takes an absolute age to load up)

Best Bit: "H for Nob"

Worst Bit: At a push, the digression into hair worry.

Final thought: If you can't laugh with them, laugh at them.
