Sorry I'm Late ★★★☆☆

Review of 'Sorry I'm Late' which can be found here at Short of the Week.

Length: 03:11
Written & directed by Tomas Mankovsky
Genre: Animation
Date: 2009
Rating: ★★★

Logline: Missing his bus, a man goes on a fantastical journey trying to reach his destination.

The most interesting thing for me was trying to figure out how this was done (which luckily we get to see at the end) rather than the story itself. So it's one of those animations where the technique becomes the dominant force. It's a run of the mill stop motion piece but done on a large scale combining real people and found objects. There is also an interesting use of perspective blended in where items and effects are placed close up to the camera.

Fundamental to the film is the lively soundtrack which runs very well alongside the visuals and enhances structure beats by varying over the land, air and sea locations. The on screen action keeps good pace with the music tempo and good work has also been done on the additional sound effects too where there is lots of attention to detail.

Story wise, it isn't that riveting and the endless traveling over cushions gets tired after a while. The change of scenery does help though and indicates a clear midpoint. I don't think elements such as character motivations, what is at stake, increasing conflict really shine through in this but it's almost forgivable as you easily get wrapped up in following the visuals. Hats off to Simon Carroll Jones who endured the whole process, mind lying on the floor probably isn't all that bad really.

Official website for the film is here.

Best Bit: The making of video during the end credits.

Worst Bit: Bit repetitive.

Final thought: Think. Is the story good enough to go through all that hassle in the first place?
